The artists in this show are working with classic and custom cars and the pin-up as subject matter to describe their visions. Elements of Surrealism, Super Realism, Pop Art, and even 19th Century Painters can be seen in the art work. The artists imagery reminds of the works of Eduardo Paolozzi, David Hockney, Wayne Thiebaud, Diane Arbus, Annie Liebowitz, Magritte, Manet and William-Adophe Bougeraux.

Shannon Brooke
Shannon Brooke is primarily an LA based photographer focusing on commercial portraiture. Shooting everything from pinup and fashion to music and advertising, her diversity is endless.

“There was a time between the 1920′s and 1960′s when a woman was sexy because of her style and personality, when beauty was defined by a woman having class. My specialty is capturing these eras, and that class with a contemporary twist enhancing their retro value”.

Philip Hall
Philip Hall has been working with light for 38 years. As an award winning Lighting Designer, Photographer, Filmmaker, and a Lighting Control Specialist.

Philip has received the prestigious Sol Cohen Award from the San Francisco Illuminating Engineering Society. Lighting projects include; televised visits by the Pope, the Queen of England, 4 Presidents of the United States, celebration of the 50th anniversaries of the Golden Gate and Bay Bridge, and thousands of permanent lighting systems in the Bay Area, his favorite being the San Francisco Opera House.

“My artwork is not about cars. My artwork is about the light and the dark, shape, color, hard and soft, satire, spirituality, sensuality, and Painting with Light. Cars are simply the vehicle I am using to drive my art to the physical.”

John Sheridan
John Sheridan was born in Detroit in the days when cars had fins like fish and now paints, collages, works and studies in the San Francisco Bay Area. Growing up in America he seen the bizarre myth of our culture close up and has tried to embody some of its contradictions, ambiguities and ambivalence’s in art.

Believing art can partly redeem an often violence-loving machine, materialistic and imperialistic society he continues to investigate several art forms including collage, and abstract flowing paint combined with hand painted images mined from America’s forgotten cinematic and commercial working class artistic history.

Troy Paiva
Troy Paiva, AKA Lost America, has been shooting full moon and light painted time-exposure night work in abandoned locations and junkyards since 1989. His surrealist and whimsical work examines the evolution and eventual abandonment of the communities, structures and social iconography spawned during America’s 20th century expansion into the deserts and cities of the West–and the modern Urban Exploration culture.

Johnny “jwho”
Johnny “jwho” is an artist, visonary, blah blah blah. That all his website says. He was recommended. I liked his work. He is a mystery, I guess thats what he wants to be.

Curator’s Statement (What You’ll Experience)Imagining how I’d curate this show on color, I recalled seeing Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” in person – the striking vividness of the color in this piece compelling me from across the room.

As any art student, I’d studied this spectacle of art through the sadly printed copies in textbooks in art school. Sure, I thought his style and intent were intriguing but those sadly desaturated and non-textured paper prints just didn’t prepare me for the visceral experience of seeing Van Gogh’s velvety depth of vibrancy in person. His colors just enveloped me like a warm feather comforter sinking heavenward into his canvas. I believed I felt what he felt creating this piece.

That’s the experience I hope people have in this show “In Living Color”.

Color evokes response. Pure and simple. That’s why I’ve selected 3 artists who subsume color into the medium and message in their work.

Kevin Tikker’s colors strike me as cels in a brain logically and illogically dancing in organized chaos, only withheld by insanely careful control of color.

Emily Weil’s work strikes me as an explosion of passionate expression – a kind of Dante’s Inferno of a struggle between depths of solitude and a vitality of life, yet just purely beautiful at the same time.

John Sheridan’s colors incite reactions in me at once of laughter, and then of anger, of inquisitiveness and amazement in his congruence of color, motion and iconic imagery.

Much later in life, I learned that Van Gogh actually ate paint. Perhaps he enjoyed the high or had some bizarre medical condition driving this behavior. But to me, I just felt that his colors were certainly good enough to eat!

“Alameda’s Abandoned Auto Row Beautified”

With a mission to beautify Alameda’s empty car dealerships on Park Street’s former ‘auto row’, local Alameda artist, Phil Hall, collaborated with Leonard Goode to revitalize the empty Alameda Toyota dealership with an exhibition of classic car fine art photography. The building’s exhibit is at the corner of Park and Clement Streets (1825 Park Street) and owner, Leonard Goode is fielding calls daily from residents inquiring about their new window exhibit.

“It saddened me that the first buildings into the gateway of my home in Alameda were abandoned auto dealerships”, comments Hall. “It felt like the perfect location to celebrate the historic cars depicted in my artwork. My goal was to beautify my city while finding more creative places to exhibit my art to the public.”

Goode, long a visionary in the auto industry, saw an opportunity to turn his unused Toyota dealership property into a ‘museum’ of sorts. Displaying Hall’s colorful and high quality auto art has recreated his abandoned dealership into a vibrant new type of car showcase.

Lighted at night the cars seem to glow with luminance and shadow, resplendent of eye-catching color, soft and hard surfaces; exactly the car culture that Hall and Goode grew up with. The Park Street Business Association produces a classic car show annually on Park Street so Goode and Hall felt the new window exhibit fit right in. Hall describes his work saying; “Cars are simply the vehicle I use to drive my art to reality”.

Ron Goode Toyota was one of the most successful auto dealerships in the city for many years until it was sold last year.

Philip Hall’s work has been displayed across the United States in art galleries, museums from Alameda to New York, and is in the private collection of Jay Leno, and other car aficionados.
